Beyond the blazing lights

What is it that
makes Atif Aslam such a huge star?

Instep investigates...

Atif Aslam: Looking like a real lad with strategically messed up hair
When Ali Zafar first came onto the music scene with his hit ditty 'Channo', he became so popular that all you could hear everywhere was 'Channo!' Ali Zafar was IT, the new face of pop music in Pakistan. Everyone thought Channo Boy was the only one who could reach the pinnacle of success that he did.

But we were wrong, oh so wrong.

Four letters. ATIF!

A quick recap – Atif Aslam came onto the music scene as lead singer of Jal with the song 'Aadat' that became immensely popular thanks to the internet. He then broke free from the band, had a drawn out battle with the Jal boys over rights to the band's name and the songs, with lots of masala added in through mudslinging via discussion forums on the web.

But all the name calling and negative publicity didn't seem to faze Atif a bit. He quickly recorded an album, released it and then sat back and watched as fans lapped it up.

It's been hard to digest the fact that Atif's such a HUGE star in Pakistan and even internationally. But having recently seen Atif Aslam in concert for the first time (yes, I live under a rock, sue me), I can see why.
The star power and fan following that he has is incredible, even mesmerising for a jaded writer who's seen it all. At the concert, there were girls screaming, throwing their phone numbers at him, along with other 'suggestions'. One can label the audience's behavior as part of their role as Atif's fan. But when Atif removed his sunglasses during a song, the venue resonated with screams, because girls were ecstatic that they could now see into his pupils. Not even Ali Azmat had that kind of following, and he is the biggest star in our music industry's galaxy.

So what is it that makes Atif click with audiences? Maybe its his looks that keep evolving – he started off looking like the average clean cut college kid and went on to wear some outlandish outfits – like a Scout's uniform complete with the yellow tie, and recently the Lenny Kravitz look that he's been sporting, with the afro and shades has got him noticed.

Could it be his videos? In Pakistan, where the majority of audiences rely on a visual medium to see and appreciate an artist, videos are of primary importance for any musical act. But to say that Atif's videos made him the star that he is, is in itself a laughable claim. The four videos that he's released post–'Aadat' are so bad, that they only provide comic relief at best.
Maybe it's the compositions. Jal had the same compositions, but with an entirely different sound. Atif has to be given credit here – he took a risk and went for a somewhat heavier sound, even if the production of the album was hardly up to standards. His producer can't be blamed here; the album was recorded and mixed within two weeks. Jal took their time, yet came up with a typical pop album, each song sounding the same with the exception of 'Manchala'. Their album did sound better in terms of production, but with one love song after the other, listeners started appreciating Atif's Jal Pari anew.

Could it be (insert horror music) 'the voice'? Fans love it, and feel that his voice is 'real' and conveys more emotion when compared to the relatively newer lot of singers in the industry right now. His critics and contemporaries beg to differ, and emphatically state that his voice is out of tune and that he can't carry a tune no matter what he does. Jal fans are insistent that Mekaal had to software–fix Atif's voice for the song that's now become a 'classic' of sorts – 'Aadat', just because he couldn't do the mock classical 'alaap' that he does.
Or maybe it's the fact that this man truly has star power. This is both good and bad. Hardly any musicians in Pakistan have star power, and the rare that do, have vanished from the music scene (come back Vital Signs, come back!) and the rest try to fake it. Atif's even made it big in India on the basis of a single song, which wasn't even all that great to begin with. At one point, every disco in India was playing 'Woh Lamhey'. So despite the fact that Atif willingly sold the rights to the song to Mahesh Bhatt and is now liable to give Mahesh a slice of the pie every time he performs the song at a concert, he's reached the level of success in India that bands like Fuzon and Strings took years to reach.

When you look beyond the blinding lights of a concert's venue, the reason for Atif's success is easy to understand – he's like a ball of plasticine, which you can mould to make anything. Put him in a mobile phone commercial, or make him dance amidst twenty half dressed girls. Make him sell his compositions to a third class producer for a paltry sum, or make him sing his heart out at style awards – Atif can do it all. And that's where his potential lies.

An artist, who can be molded into so many different types, is a gem in the eyes of stylists, multinationals [who would only love to sign him up], video directors [hey, he'll agree to shaving his hair off even], et al. So ten years down the line, if you see Atif reciting a naat or becoming a movie actor, don't be surprised. Blame that elastic quality of his.
